A colposcopy is a diagnostic exam done to check the cervix, vaginal walls, and vulva for any signs of abnormal, pre-cancerous, or cancerous tissue. This detailed examination plays a crucial role in the early detection and effective treatment of cervical cancer, helping us safeguard your long-term health.
At Takoma Park Gynecology, we perform in-office colposcopy within a comfortable and supportive setting. We prioritize efficient detection of abnormal cellular changes to ensure early intervention and personalized treatment plans. Our team offers informative and compassionate care, guiding you through every step of the process.
Overview of Colposcopy
A colposcopy is a procedure used to examine your cervix, vagina, and vulva for any abnormal cells or tissue. This procedure is performed using a specialized instrument called a colposcope, which acts like a magnifying glass with a light. The colposcope is used to examine the cervix, allowing our providers to detect changes or lesions that may not be visible to the naked eye.
Colposcopy can help diagnose:
- Noncancerous growths, such as polyps, on the cervix
- Precancerous changes in the tissue of your cervix
- Precancerous changes in the tissue of your vagina
- Precancerous changes in your vulva
- Cervical cancer
- Vaginal cancer
- Vulvar cancer
Need for Colposcopy
Several conditions and symptoms may necessitate a colposcopy. These include:
- Abnormal Pap smear results: An abnormal Pap smear can indicate the presence of abnormal cells in your cervix. Colposcopy helps further assess these abnormalities.
- HPV detection: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common infection that can cause cervical changes that may lead to cancer. Colposcopy is used to detect these changes.
- Cervical, vaginal, or vulvar lesions: Suspicious sores or lesions in these areas may require a closer examination through colposcopy to determine if treatment is needed.
Preparing for a Colposcopy
Proper preparation ensures a smoother experience during your colposcopy. To prepare for your colposcopy, we may suggest that you:
- Schedule your colposcopy when you are not on your period
- Let us know if you are pregnant
- Avoid using tampons, douching, or applying vaginal medications before the exam
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Avoid sexual intercourse for at least 48 hours before the colposcopy
Talk to our providers if you have any concerns. We are happy to address any questions you may have and help allay concerns.
Colposcopy Procedure
The colposcopy exam is performed in-office and typically takes 10 to 20 minutes with no downtime after the procedure. Additionally, we offer nitrous oxide for pain and anxiety relief, ensuring your comfort throughout the process.
Before the Procedure
You will be positioned on an examination table in the same way as you would for a Pap smear. A speculum is then gently inserted to allow access to the cervix. It holds open the walls of your vagina for better visibility.
During the Procedure
A colposcope is positioned just outside the vaginal opening to provide a magnified view of the cervix. A mild vinegar solution may be applied to the cervix and vagina to highlight abnormal areas. If any suspicious areas are found, a biopsy may be needed and is performed immediately.
If a biopsy is performed, a small piece of tissue is removed from the suspicious area to collect a sample.
After the Procedure
You may experience mild spotting or vaginal discharge following a colposcopy, especially if a biopsy was performed. However, you can return to your normal activities right after the procedure.
For cases where a biopsy was completed, we advise patients to avoid heavy exercise and tampon use for a few days. Your colposcopy exam results should be available in a few days, and you will receive information about this before you leave our clinic.
Risks of Colposcopy
While colposcopy is a very safe exam, rare complications may arise after a biopsy is performed during colposcopy. This can include:
- Light bleeding or spotting
- Infection
- Pelvic pain
However, rest assured that we take every precaution to minimize risks and ensure a safe and smooth experience for our patients.
