Endometrial Biopsy

An endometrial biopsy is a quick in-office procedure where a tissue sample is taken from the lining of your uterus (the endometrium). This test is typically used to confirm the presence of abnormal cells that can confirm various conditions affecting the uterus.

At Takoma Park Gynecology, we focus on ensuring your comfort and safety while providing clear and detailed communication throughout the procedure. We strive to ensure that the procedure is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Once the biopsy results are available, our providers will discuss your results in detail and inform you of the necessary next steps.

Understanding the Endometrial Biopsy

During an endometrial biopsy, a small sample of tissue is removed from the lining of the uterus or the endometrium. The procedure typically lasts about 10 minutes and the biopsy sample is then sent for laboratory analysis.

The sample is analyzed for the presence of abnormal cells to determine if the cell changes may be causing abnormal bleeding and other symptoms.

An endometrial biopsy may be recommended in the following cases.

  • Heavier or longer periods than usual, bleeding between periods, or any vaginal bleeding after menopause.
  • To detect any abnormal cells or changes in the uterine lining (endometrium), which could be a sign of precancerous or cancerous conditions.
  • To diagnose uterine conditions like:
    • Endometritis (infection of the uterus)
    • Endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the uterine lining)
    • Polyps (non-cancerous growths)
  • To monitor how hormone therapy is affecting the lining of your uterus.

Endometrial biopsy cannot be performed during pregnancy.

Prior to having an endometrial biopsy, let us know if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Blood clotting disorder
  • Acute pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Active cervical or vaginal infection
  • Cervical cancer
  • Cervical stenosis (severe narrowing of the cervix)

Preparing for an Endometrial Biopsy

We recommend taking the following precautionary steps to ensure the endometrial biopsy procedure goes smoothly for you.

  • Let us know about all medications and supplements you're currently taking.
  • Avoid using creams or other medicines in the vagina before the procedure.
  • Discuss the timing of your menstrual cycle with our providers.

What to Expect with an Endometrial Biopsy

At Takoma Park Gynecology, we ensure that the endometrial biopsy process is quick, safe, and as comfortable as possible. Additionally, we offer nitrous oxide for pain management, ensuring a gentle and positive experience for you.

Before the Procedure

Before the procedure, we will explain the steps of the biopsy procedure and address any questions or concerns you may have. Once you are ready, you will be asked to recline or lie back on the exam table, similar to a pelvic exam or Pap smear.

During the Procedure

The biopsy procedure itself takes about 5-10 minutes and is performed without the need for anesthesia. Our provider will use a speculum to gently open the vagina and access the cervix.

Once the cervix is cleaned and prepped with an antiseptic solution, we may use a numbing agent to minimize discomfort during the process.

Special instruments are then used to collect a tissue sample from your uterus. This step may cause some cramping and discomfort.

After the Procedure

Once the sample is collected, it is sent to a pathologist for analysis. There is no downtime after the procedure and you can resume normal activities immediately after.

It is normal to experience light spotting or mild cramping for a few hours after but over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any discomfort.

We may recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, tampon use, or sexual intercourse for 24-48 hours after the procedure to prevent infection or irritation.

Endometrial Biopsy Results & Follow-up

Once your results are available, our providers review them with you and explain what they mean for your health.

If the tissue shows no abnormalities, no further treatment may be needed unless your symptoms persist. If the results show abnormalities, you may require further tests or treatment.

Based on your biopsy results and symptoms, we work with you to determine the best course of action.

Risks of an Endometrial Biopsy

Although an endometrial biopsy is a low-risk procedure, it’s important to be aware of potential complications.

  • Mild cramping or discomfort during or after the procedure
  • Light spotting or bleeding, which is common and usually resolves quickly
  • Infection at the biopsy site

We take every precaution to ensure your safety and minimize any risks associated with the procedure. However, if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, or symptoms of infection (such as fever) after the procedure, please contact us immediately.
