Vulvar Biopsy

From skin disorders to potential malignancies, a vulvar biopsy is a test that helps diagnose conditions affecting the vulva. During this procedure, a small tissue sample is taken from the affected area for laboratory analysis.

At Takoma Park Gynecology, we understand that dealing with health issues affecting the vulva can be both physically uncomfortable and emotionally distressing. Our providers can perform procedures like the vulvar biopsy to ensure early detection and timely intervention, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and peace of mind for you.

Understanding the Vulvar Biopsy

A vulvar biopsy is a medical procedure in which a small sample of tissue is taken from the vulva for examination by a pathologist. This is typically recommended when you or your healthcare provider notice any unexplained changes on the vulva during a pelvic exam or self-examination.

A vulvar biopsy may be recommended in the following cases.

  • Unexplained lesions or lumps
  • Persistent vulvar itching or pain
  • Discoloration or thickening of the vulvar skin
  • A sore that does not heal
  • Symptoms of skin disorders like lichen planus, psoriasis, or eczema
  • Genital warts

Examining the tissue sample obtained through the vulvar biopsy is often the most direct way to understand the cause of these vulvar changes. While visual exams and other tests like blood work or swabs may offer some clues, a biopsy can offer crucial information to identify the underlying condition more precisely.

Causes can include infections, skin disorders (like lichen planus, psoriasis, or eczema), and the presence of precancerous or cancerous cells. An accurate diagnosis is essential for determining the most appropriate and timely treatment plan.

What to Expect with a Vulvar Biopsy

At Takoma Park Gynecology, we prioritize your comfort and care throughout the procedure. In order to help ease any discomfort or anxiety you may feel, we also offer nitrous oxide as a pain management option.

Here’s what you can expect with a vulvar biopsy.

Before the Procedure

During your initial consultation, please talk to our provider about any medications you are taking. If any modifications are needed, we will discuss them with you before the biopsy procedure is scheduled.

On the day of the procedure, we will explain the procedure in detail, giving you an opportunity to clarify questions and ease your concerns. Once you are ready, you will be asked to recline or lie back on the exam table, similar to a routine gynecological exam.

During the Procedure

We begin by administering a local anesthetic to the vulvar region to numb the area. A small tissue sample is then taken by our provider as part of the biopsy. You may experience some discomfort at this stage, but our nitrous oxide option offers sufficient pain relief to ensure you are pain-free throughout the procedure.

Once the sample has been collected, the biopsy site will be closed with stitches. The whole procedure takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

After the Procedure

After the procedure, you will be placed under observation for some time to watch for signs of continued bleeding. You will be given post-procedure care instructions for the biopsy site before discharge. Mild discomfort or swelling is common after a vulvar biopsy and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

While vulvar biopsies are generally safe, potential risks can include infection, bleeding, and some scarring. At Takoma Park Gynecology, we take every precaution to minimize these risks and ensure a safe procedure.

In most cases, the biopsy site heals within 1-2 weeks, and you can resume normal activities within a few days.

Vulvar Biopsy Results & Follow-ups

Once the biopsy results are available, we schedule a follow-up appointment with you to discuss them in detail. If the biopsy shows no abnormal cells, no further treatment may be necessary, but continued monitoring will be advised.

However, if the result reveals any signs of infection, skin conditions, or cancerous (or precancerous) changes, we will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. This could include medications and additional tests.
